Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 small Granny Smith apples
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 (9 inch) double-crust pie pastry

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth, then add sugars and water. Boil briefly before reducing heat to simmer for about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Press one pastry into a pie pan and roll out the second, cutting it into strips for a lattice crust.
  4. Fill the bottom crust with sliced apples, then arrange the lattice strips on top.
  5. Pour the sugar-butter mixture over the lattice and brush some onto the crust.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C), then reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes until apples are tender.
  7. Allow the pie to cool slightly before serving.
