  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened) for filling
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed) for filling
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon for filling
  • 1/2 tsp salt for filling
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened) for frosting
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened) for frosting
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar for frosting
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract for frosting

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk and water with sugar and yeast. Let sit until bubbly (about 5 minutes).
  2. Combine flour, cocoa powder, and salt in another bowl. Gradually add to the yeast mixture along with eggs, melted butter, red food coloring, and vanilla extract to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl to rise for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  5. While rising, mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the filling.
  6. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle and spread the filling evenly across it. Roll tightly into a log and cut into equal portions.
  7. Arrange rolls in a greased baking dish; let rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Beat cream cheese and butter together for frosting; gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  10. Frost warm rolls before serving.
