  • 3 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn)
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking pan.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples; set aside.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, mix melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
  6. Spread half the batter in the pan; layer half the apple slices on top.
  7. Add remaining batter over apples and top with remaining apple slices.
  8. Mix sugar and cinnamon for topping; sprinkle over apples.
  9. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool slightly before slicing; enjoy warm or at room temperature.
